Photo of the Day
An obsession with Dahlias began last year. We tried digging them up and over-wintering them but didn’t have any luck. If you have any awesome tips on doing so, please let me know.
This dahlia here is my favorite, so far; the bloom is around 8 to 10 inches across:
I’m not even sure how it’s still standing upright, as we don’t have it staked or supported at all.

Enjoy the rest of your week!
Absolutely magnificent. A treat for the eyes.
Thanks Don! I’m really in awe of this plant!
Fabulous! Because of its size, it is most probably a Dinner Plate.
Thank you! I thought dinner plate dahlias were even larger – I’ve seen some huge ones in catalogs and online? I love it either way, though! 🙂
Stunning! Are they deer resistant? While I live in a populated area, there are literal HERDS of deer that make their way through our lawn every night and feast on everything growing. (One night my husband was watching TV and happened to glance out the window and there was a deer starring at him with its nose pressed against the glass. He must have thought my husband was edible.) I am frantically trying to find something to plant around my mailbox that the deer will leave alone. Do you think Dahlia would work?
lol! We have some serious deer issues but still have never had one walk right up to one of our windows! 🙂 The deer have munched the tops of our dahlia plants a number of times but once they’ve started blooming (if they make it that far), they seem to leave them alone. Lavender is the one plant that the deer have never, ever touched in our yard. Otherwise, it seems to be hit or miss, depending on how hungry the buggers are.
You’re right! Lavender and Butterfly Bushes seem to be the only thing they don’t like.
Yes! They don’t eat our butterfly bushes either. And actually, they don’t bother our Echinacea and black-eyed susans either.
Sadly, our brazen deer feast on Black-Eyed Susans. Jerks.
Ours must be too full from eating all our hostas. lol!
Every time in see a dahlia, I think about planting them the next year. What a lovely blossom.
Thanks! They truly are beautiful. Hopefully we’ll have better luck at digging them up and saving them this year.
Wow! Hope these will grow in Denver. I’ll be starting my spring garden planning this winter.
I’m in awe of them, Gwynne! We have them in a variety of types and colors and they all amaze me. Hopefully, we’ll have better luck over-wintering them this year.
